    Question/sentence
    Message de vaiana posté le 23-02-2019 à 18:42:16 (S | E | F)
    Hello,
why is "are they safe" written in the following sentence? I myself would have put the other way around since it is actually not a question...
Thanks so much for your help!!

"Planes aren’t comfortable, but are they safe!"

    Hello.
Two people are discussing the merits of airplane travel. The first thinks that airplanes are not comfortable. The second agrees, and wants to talk about about their safety.
"Planes aren’t comfortable, but are they safe?" This is confusing when written. Two negative statements are not connected with but. If you change the but to and, OK.
Planes aren’t comfortable, but are they (ever) safe! The only way it works is if it is spoken and you can hear the exclamation!
Planes aren’t comfortable, but they are safe.OK
Planes are comfortable, but are they safe? OK
Another example: a discussion about candy.
"Chocolates are not good for the health, but are they ever delicious!!"
I hope I haven't made this less clear! Sherry
