    Advice/sentence
    Message de jocelyne14 posté le 14-01-2021 à 17:46:45 (S | E | F)
    Hello,

I am reading a book but I am wondering about the sentence structure:
"The flat was BEING let unfurnished."

I understand the sentence but I don't see why the writer uses BEING between was and let in the sentence.
For To me, I would have written the sentence :
'The flat was let unfurnished" (L'appartement était loué non meublé"

Thank you for your help (I searched the Internet but I can't couldn't find the answer for to my question.

    Hello
If somebody says : I am followed, it can mean that for the past week, he has been followed.
It is not uncommon to find : I am being followed, meaning that I am speaking of the present situation (and resent it)

It would not be uncommon to find : "The flat was BEING let unfurnished.", describing the present situation at that time.
"The flat was let unfurnished." could either mean that, back in 2018, the flat was let unfurnished, l'appartement fut loué non-meublé.
Or that in 2018, the flat was (regularly, usually)let unfurnished. en 2018, l'appartement était loué non meublé.

"The flat was BEING let unfurnished." means that the narrator recalls what the situation was at the precise moment he is describing.
As the flat was being let unfurnished when John visited it, he had no other choice but to buy second-hand furniture to furnish it.
