Bonjour à tous,

Quelqu'un pourrait-il m'expliquer dans quel contexte choisir "that" plutôt que "which" et inversement ?

Voici quelques exemples pour illustrer ma question :

Where is the phone which was on the table ?
The house that she lives in is huge.
The clothes which he bought were quite expensive.
He likes the piano that costs 1000$.

Dans certains exemples, which/who est explicatif, donne des éléments qui pourraient être omis alors que that est limitatif.
All the people that had been questioned by the police were allowed to leave.
Seulement ceux qui ont été interrogés par la police ont pu repartir, pas les autres.
All the people,who had been questioned by the police, were allowed to leave. Tous sont repartis. Les virgules ont leur rôle à jouer.

Which et that sont interchangeables dans des phrases lambda comme :

The present which/that he brought was nice.
