    If you are talking about someone's ability, for example "My German is quite good", you use a personal pronoun and the name of the language only without the word "language" or "tongue".

    Compare this with an example where you are talking about a language as an abstract concept,
    "The English language has existed for just over 1500 years."

    Using the word "tongue" for "language" is confined to certain usages, being rather poetical, or old-fashioned. Example: "Speaking in tongues" (biblical); "A Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue" is the title of a historical dictionary.
