Hard work would be equivalent to difficult work (painfull), work hard is the action a man woks hard, but regardless the job is itself hard or not.

Example, a hard work is to move a ton of things from one point to another point.

I work hard (long period of time) in order to get ...

Then the same principle is with "ing" the difference is :
I work hard to get more money => this is usually
I'm working hard to get more money => this is actual

    I hope this helps.

    Hello!

I work hard or He is working hard (work / is working = un verbe, hard = un adverbe)
Je travaille dur, il travaille dur, il est en train de travailler dur.

is working = le présent continu en anglais. Lien Internet
    ou Lien Internet

This is hard work (work = un nom, hard = un adjectif)
    Ce travail est très difficile.
    C'est un travail difficile.

    He is a hard-working man. (hard-working = un adjectif)
    Il est vraiment très travailleur.

    Cordialement

(I hope the French examples are correct and make sense)
