    Anyway/ Besides
    Message de laurent-91 posté le 20-09-2011 à 00:34:20 (S | E | F)
    Hello,

    What's the difference between ANYWAY and BESIDES when they mean adding an argument to a previous statement?
    For example, tell me what's the difference between these sentences please:
    «It's too expensive, and anyway, we don't have enough time to do it»
    and
    «It's too expensive, and besides, we don't have enough time to do it»
    Is ANYWAY more informal English than BESIDES?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hello, I would say that in this particular case the two words are synonymous. (To split hairs, "besides" introduces an additional reason, whereas "anyway" explains why the first reason is moot.)

    See you.

    Hello laurent-91,

    I don't usually answer questions by a French translation, but I feel it might be useful in this case.
    ANYWAY = de toute façon,
    BESIDES = d'ailleurs, en plus, aussi.

    But for me, the best way to learn English is by consulting English dictionaries which explain the words in English.
    F.i. if you look up ANYWAY and BESIDES in English online dictionaries, you will find very interesting definitions, examples, quotations and explanations.
