    Construction phrase/aide
    Message de fab76guitare posté le 19-01-2014 à 16:52:53 (S | E | F)
    Hello!

I am working on my English improvement. However, I have a few issues as regards the end of my sentence:
    4) Il a travaillé dans un pays anglophone pendant longtemps mais n’a jamais réussi à parler anglais correctement.
He had worked in a english-speaking country For a long time; however, he never succeeded in well speaking english.

Thank you for reading and helping me

    Hello fab

Mind the use of capital letters
You have used two past tenses (past perfect and past simple)However there is a connection with the present and the use of "for" should also remind you of a rule....
    I'll give you an example:
I have been reading this book for a few days.
    Have a go....

    Hello,
you are mistaking "for"(depuis) and "for" (pendant).
I worked for two hours this morning" is correct.
He was ill for a week during the holidays last summer.
    les 2 "pendant":
for + durée: question: How long was he ill?
during + période (au cours de) question: When was he ill ?

    4) Il a travaillé (il travailla) dans un pays anglophone pendant longtemps mais n’a jamais réussi à parler anglais correctement.
He had worked (prétérit) in a english-speaking country (majuscule à English et a devient an devant un son voyelle: an idiot, an elephant, an island) for a long time; however, he never succeeded in speaking english well(adverbe de manière en fin de phrase).

Il travaille dans un pays anglophone depuis des années mais ne sait toujours pas parler anglais correctement se dirait:
He has been working in an English-speaking country for years but still can't speak correct English.

    Bonjour,

Quelques erreurs au niveau des majuscules mais aussi des temps
Si l'action est terminée on emploie le prétérit
Avec le "never" il s'agit d'un bilan donc :present perfect
He worked in AN English-speaking country for a long time;however , he HAS never SUCCEEDED in speaking English fluently (or properly)

    Hello mimioye!

Mettre un present perfect à "succeed" - un verbe que je n'aime pas, préférant son synonyme "manage", soit dit en passant - me paraît un peu "fort", voire "bancal".
En effet, je mettrais tout seulement un prétérit :
He worked in an English-speak country for a long time however he never succeeded in speaking English fluently (Bin diou, qu'est-ce qu'elle est longue cette phrase !)
Ou bien, la phrase de gérondif :
He has been working in an English-speaking country for years but still can't speak correct English.

He has been working for such a long time in a country where you speak English and he still can't speak fluent English!

    See you!
