Intention and refusal. - English lesson
I ) INTENTION and REFUSAL : VERBS, MODAL AUXILIARIES , PERIPHRASES...
1) Some verbs of INTENTION express impersonal information, or a NEED, a form of WILLPOWER which isn't really strong.
a) to intend to - to plan to - to like (in the conditional = I'd like to) :
ex : He'd really like to improve his knowledge of the language and is studying very hard.
ex : We intend to tell them the whole truth, one day, but not now!
b) to refuse = impersonal information:
ex : We refuse to eat such revolting food!
2) MODAL AUXILIARIES , PERIPHRASES and EXPRESSIONS are, on the contrary, more PERSONAL, familiar and strong.
a) to be thinking of + -ing:
ex : In spite of the work I have to do, I'm thinking of going to the party!
b) to be going to + infinitive:
ex : I'm going to take that exam as soon as possible.
c) 'WILL' expresses ‘strong and determined willpower' to express an act of willpower, for which determination is strong.
ex : In spite of all that he has to fight against, he will survive!
d) In the negative form, ‘won't / 'wouldn't' express negative willpower, a determined refusal .
ex : Try as you may, he won't yield!
ex : He was ordered to give his papers but he wouldn't do it!
