Three questions

Good evening
I have three tiny questions about usual English and I would really appreciate your help.
1) When I was on holiday in Ireland, one waitress asked me "do you want some veg?". I just wonder if "veg" is common in the USA or is it just in UK & Eire?
2) I came across yesterday the term " Maitre d' ". First I believed it was a mistake in the text and the word "hotel" was missing. But as I searched the web it seems that it isn't a mistake at all ! Can someone confirm please?
3) I knew the answer but I am not sure now... United States : plural or singular? If I remember well I've already seen in Time Magazine "The United States is ...". But I have doubts
Thanks in advance.
Biglo, still learning.

Hello Biglo,
For the second question, " Maitre d' " is entirely right. You can often meet it in american books.

Bonjour,
Yes, "veg" is sometimes used to mean vegetables in the U.K and Ireland. In the United States they say "vegies".
"Maitre d' " is an abbreviation for maitre d'hotel It's pronounced like maitre-dee
The United States is a singluar.
